In case you haven’t noticed yet, life is not exactly a walk in the park, it’s full of challenges, disappointments, heartaches, and overall jus
t an ongoing sensation of discomfort.
We are constantly being bombarded by the news and social media about everything that is wrong in our world. Every day, we are exposed to thousands of advertisements which try to make us feel like our life will be complete if we only buy one more shiny product. We tend to condition happiness with acquiring something we don’t currently have, telling ourselves that we’ll be happy when we find love, or when we have a million dollars, or when we quit our job to travel the world. By doing so, we send a clear and constant message to ourselves that what we currently have is not enough, and it makes us feel miserable.
You probably heard the half glass cliche a million times, the reason it’s so commonly used is because it holds true. It is completely up to us to decide which part of the glass, or the world in this case, we want to focus on, the negative or the positive.
I spent a fair amount of my life looking at the world through the half empty lense and I can’t say that it served me well. Even when things went well, I always had that nagging feeling that it wasn’t quite enough. As a result of my frustration, I started looking for ways to change my point of view. A good dosage of daily meditation and stoicism opened up a new perspective for me. While life continued to present its challenges I gradually started to focus less on the crappy and more on the good, and as a result I became more content.
Now, I am sorry to disappoint you, but I haven’t reached nirvana and my journey to tranquility has just begun, in fact that’s part of the reason why I decided to create this project. Yes Plenty is my antidote to the “not enough” syndrome. The simple truth is, that in order to find tranquility we need to spend more time reflecting on all the great things we already have and less time on the things we are missing. My goal is to create
short essays which will remind us to not take anything for granted and that reality is whatever we chose it to be.
